Using watercolor, pencil, ink and etching, José Antonio Suárez Londoño attempts and succeeds in the impossible task and shared human desire of trying to present the chaos of reality in an ordered way.

Drawing, a daily activity from the 1970s onwards for the Colombian artist José Antonio Suárez Londoño, is the tool through which the artist opens up his internal world to the viewer.  For the first time, in the San Gimignano show, José Antonio Suárez Londoño exhibits drawings on a larger scale as well as presenting a collection of previously unseen drawings completed between 2018 and 2019.  One of the Dibujo 2019 series includes rubberstamp-produced tiny images; the artist has been creating small rubber stamps since the 1980s and continues to do so today.

In San Gimignano, the viewer has the pleasure of witnessing a manifestation of one of Suarez Londono’s time-structured approaches to drawing with 12 frames filled by a month’s worth of drawings completed between 1st January and 31st December 1999. These drawings, inspired by the artist’s reading of The Journal of Eugene Delacroix (Phaidon Edition), are beautiful anecdotes or images from the book as well as moments from the artist’s everyday life.

A site-specific mural fills one of the rooms and was installed on request of the artist after seeing the space in Galleria Continua’s apartments. The wall drawing envelopes the room and Suàrez Londoño’s imaginative lines suck the viewer into his fantastical world. This infinite universe continues in the next room with a series of 100 monochrome etchings completed in their original size and in amazing detail.

The final room is lined with mixed-media drawings that illustrate the fantasy world that Suàrez Londoño executes with precision. The drawings have a literary quality to them; pleasantly and meticulously dated and stamped, they are complex, joyful and touched by a modern sanguinity and an epistemological narrative thread.
