Born in Mumbai, India in 1976.

Lives and works in Mumbai.

席帕·古普塔 graduated from the Sir J.J. School of Fine Arts in Mumbai in 1997.

Her media ranges across manipulated found objects, photography, video, interactive computer-based installation, and performance.

The removal of individual identity and the obscuring of violence inherent in the notion of borders and boundaries figure heavily in her work, which is informed by events she observes in her native India.

She examines the influences of politics and culture on the construction of identity, and questions perception through her work.

She had solo shows at Contemporary Art Center in Cincinnati, Arnofini in Bristol, OK Centrum in Linz, Museum voor Moderne Kunst, Arnhem, Lalit Kala Akademie with Vadehra Art Gallery in New Delh, and Gallerie Yvon Lambert, Paris, 常青画廊, 圣吉米那诺 and Gallery Chemould Prescott Road in Mumbai. In 2015, she presented a solo project at ‘My East is Your West’ a two person joint India Pakistan exhibition, by the Gujral Foundation in Venice.

Gupta has participated in the 8th Berlin Biennale, Sharjah Biennale ‘13, Younger Than Jesus Triennale at New Museum, New York; Lyon Biennale ‘09 curated by Hou Hanru; Gwangju Biennale ‘08 directed by Okwui Enwezor and curated by Ranjit Hoskote; Yokohama Triennale ‘08 curated by Hans Ulrich Obrist; Liverpool Biennale ‘06 curated by Gerardo Mosquera and biennales at Auckland, Seoul, Havana, Sydney, Echigo- Tsumari and Shanghai.

Gupta's work has been shown in leading international institutions and museums such as the Tate Modern, Serpentine Gallery, Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Daimler Chrysler Contemporary, Mori Museum, Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New Museum, Chicago Cultural Center, Louisiana Museum and Devi Art Foundation in Gurgaon amongst others.

In 2012 she designed the book ‘dates.sites: Project Cinema City Bombay/Mumbai’, edited by Madhusree Dutta. She has co-facilitated ‘Crossovers & Rewrites: Borders over Asia Museum of Contemporary Art, World Social Forum, Porto Alegre’ in 2005 and ‘Aar Paar, a public art exchange project between India and Pakistan alongwith Huma Mulji from 2002 – 2006.

In 2017, her solo “Drawing in the Dark’ will travel to three European institutions, she will show a site specific project at a church in Kassel, participate at the NGV Triennale, Melbourne and the Goteborg Biennale and open a permanent sculpture at the Art Line Park in Milan.
