艾未未于1957年出生在北京，目前在北京（中国）、柏林（德国）、剑桥（英国）和里斯本（葡萄牙）生活和工作。
艾未未被称为当代最有影响力的艺术家之一。
在揭露中国政府的腐败、缺乏人权和言论自由的尊重后，他被逮捕、殴打、隔离，并被禁止旅行。
作为异议人士的活动与他的艺术事业紧密相连，他继续创作作品，以体现他的政治信仰，同时为创造力和实验留出充足的空间。
过去三十年的创作让我们得以探索他与西方文化和自己国家文化之间的复杂关系——在深厚的归属感和同样强烈的反叛冲动之间挣扎。
他的父亲，诗人艾青，1958年被标记为“右派”，艾未未和他的家人被流放，先到中国东北的黑龙江，然后很快被送到中国西北的新疆沙漠。
1976年毛泽东去世后，艾青被平反，家人搬回北京。艾未未在北京电影学院入学，是“星星”艺术小组的原始成员之一。
1981年，艾未未移居美国，在1983至1993年间生活在纽约。他在帕森斯设计学院短暂学习。在纽约，艾未未发现了马塞尔·杜尚和安迪·沃霍尔的作品。
1993年，艾未未回到中国照顾生病的父亲，他参与建立了北京东村，这是一群先锋艺术家的社区。1997年，他共同创办了中国艺术档案与仓库（CAAW），这是中国最早的独立艺术空间之一。
1999年，他开始对建筑产生兴趣，设计了位于北京东北边缘草厂地区的自宅。2003年，艾未未创办了自己的建筑事务所FAKE Design。2007年，作为documenta 12的参与者，艾未未将1001名中国公民带到卡塞尔，作为他的“童话”项目的一部分。2008年，艾未未与瑞士建筑团队赫尔佐格与德梅隆设计了北京国家体育场。
2010年，艾未未用1亿个瓷陶瓷瓜子铺满了泰特现代美术馆的涡轮大厅地板。
2012年，艾未未获得了由人权基金会颁发的瓦茨拉夫·哈维尔创意异议奖。
2015年，艾未未因支持人权的行动获得了国际特赦组织颁发的良心大使奖。
2017年，他的史诗电影《人流》参加了第74届威尼斯国际电影节。该影片有力地表现了当代大规模的人类迁移。影片在23个国家拍摄，涵盖了包括阿富汗、孟加拉国、法国、希腊、德国、伊拉克、以色列、意大利、肯尼亚、墨西哥和土耳其在内的多个国家的紧急人类故事。
2021年，这位艺术家的回忆录《千年的欢乐与悲伤》出版。
2022年，日本艺术协会宣布艾未未获得第33届普利美帝皇家雕塑奖。

艾未未：为人权发声的代言人
艾未未1957年出生于北京。他于1981年移居美国，并在纽约生活了十年。在纽约期间，他受到了安迪·沃霍尔和杜尚作品的深刻影响。当他因父亲的健康问题不得不返回中国时，艾未未开始对建筑产生兴趣。他在北京东北角的草场地设计了自己的工作室，并于2003年创立了他的建筑工作室。
2017年，他以纪录片《人流》参加了第74届威尼斯国际电影节。这部影片以极富视觉表现力的方式讲述了人类大规模迁徙的史诗，跟随人们穿越23个国家的痛苦迁徙历程。
