杉本博司1948年出生于东京。1970年毕业于东京的圣保罗大学,随后于1974年毕业于洛杉矶的艺术中心设计学院。同年,他搬到了纽约,现在在东京和纽约之间分居生活。

1988年,他获得了每日艺术奖,2009年获得日本艺术协会的高松宫殿下纪念世界文化奖;2001年,他的作品获得了享有盛誉的哈苏基金会国际奖,2014年获得了野口勇奖,2017年获得英国皇家摄影学会的百年纪念奖章,2018年获得了美国国家艺术俱乐部的摄影荣誉奖章。
伦敦的海沃德画廊将举办他的一个大型个展《时间机器》直到2024年1月7日。2024年,该展览将巡展至北京的UCCA尤伦斯当代艺术中心和悉尼的澳大利亚当代艺术博物馆。

杉本博司:捕捉时间与时间存在
杉本博司1948年出生于东京,在高中时拍摄了他的第一批摄影作品。大学毕业后,他前往西方,途经苏联、波兰等共产主义国家,最终抵达西欧。
1974年,他搬到纽约,并首次参观了美国自然历史博物馆。展馆中的动物与人类模型让他着迷,那些动物既真实又超现实;他找到了一种看待世界的新方式,就像他自己是一台相机。
杉本博司是一位多学科艺术家,他的创作涉及摄影、雕塑、装置艺术和建筑设计。通过他的作品,他探讨了与历史和时间存在相关的多种主题。
杉本博司系列作品中的照片是精神图像,通过作者对摄影媒介和印刷工艺的控制而得以实现。时间是他作品中的核心主题。通过长时间曝光摄影,杉本博司展示了这一媒介如何既能操控又能改变现实。
在他的职业生涯中,他获得了许多奖项和荣誉。他的作品被伦敦泰特美术馆、纽约大都会艺术博物馆和芝加哥当代艺术博物馆等多家国际博物馆和机构收藏。
