顾德新：对有机与人工材料的探索
顾德新1962年出生于中国北京。他是中国最重要的自学成才的艺术家之一。顾德新是中国最早尝试探索材料不同性质的艺术家之一，这些材料既包括有机的，也包括无机的，既令人着迷，又令人厌恶。顾德新的视觉语言充满了想象力。他的作品自由地表达出其无法抑制的、充满玩味和无限生机的意愿，这些作品表面上似乎表现了一个天真无邪的世界，但实际上它们代表了现实生活中的哲学和实际主题，分析了当代中国的禁忌和政治社会状况。
1989年，他是三位入选庞毕度中心划时代展览“世界的魔术师”的中国艺术家之一，这是中国当代艺术首次在国际上展出。1990年代至2000年代初，他参与了一系列“中国展览”，展出了水果、肉类和塑料的装置作品，这些作品有意拒绝与社会主义的象征遗产产生联系。顾德新不喜欢向观众强加某种解读，因此他总是首先用序列号为作品命名，后来则直接用作品完成的日期命名。
在他的作品中，早期作品中出现的元素和序列在整个创作过程中反复出现——例如在绘画中首次描绘的苹果和肉块，后来在装置中作为真实物体再次出现。他最终决定结束职业生涯，回归“正常”生活，回到他成长并创作了几乎所有作品的北京居民区。许多评论者认为，这一决定并非是对艺术的拒绝，而是对社会的抗议。
顾德新在2009年6月，在北京常青画廊举办了最后一个个展后，彻底离开了艺术界。
